Welcome back for Term 3! I hope you enjoyed your break and are refreshed and ready for a busy ten weeks.
At the end of last term we farewelled Josh Quaid and this term we welcome Hine Timoko to our teaching staff and Education Assistants Karen Burridge, Stacey Binns, Kelly Lyall and Melissa Clark. We wish Josh all the best at his new school. Please help make our new staff members welcome.
It was pleasing to hear from the specialist teachers today how impressed they are with the way students have returned to school. Let’s keep this Bertram FRREE behaviour going for the whole term.
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held around the country each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
During the first two weeks of Term 3 we are celebrating NAIDOC Week at Bertram. During Week 1 & 2 LAs have been buddied up to cook kangaroo stew and damper. This is a huge undertaking and I thank Mrs Penney for all her efforts. The feedback from students has been very positive so you may have some requests for kangaroo stew for dinner.
All our LAs have been busy working on art projects reflecting Aboriginal culture. These will be displayed around the school next week and you are encouraged to take some time to walk around and check them all out.
Our NAIDOC Assembly will be held next Wednesday, July 25th. We are hoping to hold this in the swale as a whole school event. If the weather is not kind we will have to move to the undercover area and limit the numbers but we won’t make that decision until closer to the time.
At our NAIDOC Assembly the choirs and our Aboriginal students will be performing two songs with special guest, Gina Williams and the Clontarf Academy students from Gilmore College will be dancing.
We hope to see you at this special event.
The Interschool Cross Country will be held at the end of Week 3. Mr Myers and Miss Campbell have organised a training schedule including running the track at Thomas Oval before school and training on Bertram Oval before school and at lunch time. Please note the training sessions at Thomas Oval are not compulsory but it makes a big difference to the runners on the day of competition if they are familiar with the track. If you are taking your child to Thomas Oval please be aware you need to stay there for the duration of the training and then drive them to school.
At the end of last term we sent home swimming and camp notes to give families time to budget for these events. The problem with long time frames can be that you have so much time you actually miss the deadline. There was some confusion with the accounts sent home for Year 6 Camp. If you have any questions about the amount you owe, please talk to the ladies in the front office.
The senior choir has a busy schedule during this term. Denim Day, this Friday will raise funds to support our choir representing Bertram so beautifully. If you have any questions about the choirs please talk to Miss Cheong (senior choir) or Miss Blekkenhorst (middle choir).
Our new kindy group, LA 17-2 is slowly filling up. If you know of a child living in the Bertram intake area born between 1st July 2013 and 30th June 2014 who is not currently attending kindy, please encourage their family to come in and enrol them.
Kindy 2019 enrolments for children born between 1st July 2014 and 30th June 2015 are currently open. Students living within the Bertram intake area OR those living in the original Bertram area who have siblings attending Bertrm PS are eligible to enrol.
If your child is moving into high school in 2019 you are encouraged to enrol by Friday, July 20th (this Friday). Please contact the high school you are planning to send them to for local information.
With the new bike racks situated at the rear of the school we will be locking the gate leading to Price Parkway between 8:45am and 2:15pm. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
I look forward to seeing you at Community Chat this Friday for ‘Meet the Principal’. Please come along for a chat and some morning tea. I will have some Bertram Sight Words packs to give to participants this week. Younger children are welcome under your supervision.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
