What a cold, wet day we are having today! Fortunately it stopped raining at lunch and recess times so our students were able to get out for a run and some fresh air.
The swale and oval now have quite large bodies of water which, while very tempting have resulted in some students becoming very wet and cold. Please encourage your children to stay away from the water while they are at school. In the swale area we have painted an orange line indicating students are to stop and not go any closer to the water, however the orange line is now underwater on one side!
We had hoped our NAIDOC Assembly last Wednesday would be for all students down in the swale area, however arrangements needed to be changed due to the weather. We were fortunate to receive a PALS (Partnership, Acceptance, Learning and Sharing) Grant and some NAIDOC funding this year providing the opportunity to have Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse come and sing with our students. I wasn’t here for the assembly but hear our choirs once again represented our school beautifully.
Each LA contributed to our NAIDOC Art Exhibition in the undercover area – I hope you had a chance to look at the representations of Aboriginal culture produced by our students.
Our school community was very excited to have the boys from the Gilmore College Clontarf Academy share their culture through dance and music. We are hoping to arrange for them to attend a junior assembly in the near future.
Today our Year 4 students participated in PEAC (Primary Extension and Challenge) testing. From this testing a small percentage of students across the state have the opportunity to participate in special off-site programs in Year 5 & 6. If your Year 4 child is identified for PEAC you will be notified later in the year.

In Community Chat last week, Mr Cardenia talked about the Science curriculum and did some investigations with parents. This Friday, Mrs Cook will be talking about the Indonesian curriculum and teaching participants some useful Indonesian phrases. Did you know Languages is compulsory for Year 3 students in WA this year, and next year it will be compulsory for all Year 3 and 4 students.
When we surveyed parents at last year’s Open Night, the majority expressed their preference for receiving information from the school on SeeSaw. In an effort to keep as many families as possible informed about what is happening at school, we are uploading whole school messages to SeeSaw every Monday afternoon. There will be times when alerts will go out on other days, however we encourage you make a habit of checking SeeSaw for notices every Monday evening.
The weather forecast for this Friday’s Interschool Cross Country is a little gloomy, however Mr Myers has been informed this event will go ahead rain, hail or shine. You may wish to send your child with a spare set of clothes just in case they are wet when they return to school. Please remember students will be required to travel to and from Thomas Oval with the team on the bus. We hope to see lots of parents supporting the Bertram team at this event.
This Friday is Derby Day – students are invited to bring a gold coin and dress in their favourite sporting colours. We hope our West Australian AFL teams demonstrate their FRREE behaviours when they play each other this Sunday.
Have you noticed we are Painting Kwinana READ at Bertram? Each week you will find the little red library outside one of our LAs. You are welcome to take a book home from this collection and either return it when you finish or replace it with another book. There is no need to tell anyone you are borrowing. If you have children’s books you wish to donate to our little red library collection, please send them to Miss Moug in the office.
As a parent you play a vital role in preparing and encouraging your child for the world of reading and writing. This is a great opportunity to freshen up your collection of books.
Reading to Your Child
Thank you to all those families who are supporting Pancake Wednesday. Last week we sold a record 154 pancakes and today it was over 140 despite the cold, wet conditions! Mrs Penney commented this morning how smoothly Pancake Wednesday is running with our new roster. I encourage you to let her know if you are able to help, whether it is every week or just from time to time. Helpers are appreciated any time from 6:30am when cooking begins to 8:30am for clean up.
Please make sure you have Wednesday, September 19th in your calendar for Open Night. This year we will have a selection of food trucks on site so you can get some dinner on your way home – or eat before you leave.
I hope to see you at the P&C Meeting tonight.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
