Today we celebrated Harmony Day at Bertram. Although the official date is earlier in the year we prefer to choose a date where the calendar is not so crowded. It was lovely to see so many of our students and staff dress in orange or to represent their culture.

The Meaning of Harmony Day

At a recent Community Chat Mrs Awashti taught the participating parents how to play Numero and gave away some packs as prizes. The P&C has responded to the interest expressed by families and arranged a deal with Ziggies where they are able to sell Numero packs for $15 each and raise funds at the same time. Collection for packs which have been ordered is Wednesday afternoon (today) or Thursday morning. Numero is a great way to have fun and improve Maths at the same time. With over 70 packs already ordered from the P&C I’m sure there will be lots of Maths fun over the holidays.

Reports were emailed out and uploaded to Connect during Week 8. This is the first time we have used the Department of Education’s kindy report and the feedback has been very positive. If your child’s teacher indicated they would like an interview or if you would like to discuss your child’s report please contact their teacher to make a time to meet early next term.

I have had some questions regarding the comments on Semester 1 Reports. Teachers are required to provide a personalised comment for English, Maths and the Overall Comment. For other learning areas they provide a general comment indicating the areas that have been covered during the semester. A ‘C’ grade in Year 3-6 or ‘Satisfactory’ in P-2 indicates your child is achieving what is expected for their year level in that learning area.

If you are accessing your child’s report from the link which was emailed to you, remember this link is live for 4 weeks. Reports should be downloaded and saved from email or accessed from Connect. If you are having difficulty logging in to Connect please let the front office know.

Our new kindy group, LA 17-2 still has spaces. If your child was born between July 1st 2013 and June 30th 2014 and you live in the Bertram intake area OR currently have children at Bertram please enrol them so they have the opportunity to engage in kindergarten before they go to Pre-Primary. Please share this information with anyone you know whose eligible child is not attending kindy.

Enrolments for kindy 2019 are now open. If your child was born between July 1st 2014 and June 30th 2015 they are eligible to start kindy in 2019. As kindy is not compulsory students who enrol at the end of the year often need to be put on a waiting list until there are enough to start a new class. This is disappointing for parents and the child.

Swimming notes for Term 3 have now gone home to provide families a lengthy period of time to budget for them. If you wish to enter into a payment plan for any school event, please contact our Manager Corporate Services, Liz O’Born.

The cost of Year 6 Camp can vary from student to student depending on the level of independent fundraising each family has undertaken. Because of this online payment will not be available.  Camp notes will also be going home this week so families have time to budget. The Year 6 teachers, parents and students have worked really hard over the past twelve months to make this camp as affordable as possible for families. A special mention to Lemara Pereira for the tireless effort she has put in.

If you will be leaving Bertram at the end of this term – or will be starting at Bertram in Term 3 please contact the office. Children who leave remain on our roll until a transfer note is received from their new school.

In Term 3 Bertram does not have any School Development Days – which means school begins on Monday, July 16th for staff and students.

I hope the school holidays are all you hope. If you are travelling, travel safe.

Make reading to or listening to your child read every day a priority, explore a range of books and re-read the favourites. Don’t forget to include a range of fiction and non-fiction books.

5 Reasons You Should Read to Your Child

Keep practicing reading and spelling the Bertram Sight Words. These words are mainly the tricky ones we just need to learn and remember. Two weeks of holidays can be long enough for your child to forget some of them.

Bertram 1000 Sight Words

Take time to have conversations with your child – talking with them not to them or at them has been found to impact children’s brain and language development. Hopping into the car is often a cue for children to reach for their devices, consider taking back some of this time to have conversations with them – no matter how short the trip.

Talking and Listening to Your Child

Find some time for outdoor play every day – unless of course you are on the direct flight from Perth to London! Watching our students exploring the swale, building cubby houses in the bushy trees and finding every swampy puddle on the oval to wade through today highlights how little resources our children need to have fun outdoors.

The Benefits of Outdoor Play

Our office will be closed from 4:00pm Friday, June 29th until 8:00am Monday, July 16th. Emails may not be responded to during this time.

Thank you for your support and engagement with our school in Term 2.

PBS MESSAGE FOR THE FORTNIGHT

Vacation care

Our fun filled ‘Vacation Care program’ starts next week with many exciting excursions.  The  children will tackle some challenging ropes and adventure games at  ‘Fairbridge’, jump for joy at ‘Rebound’ and experience a 78 story treehouse performance at the State Theatre Centre. They will have an opportunity to make an amazing candle to take home and participate in a lego brick challenge.

The service will provide a nutritious morning tea, lunch and afternoon for the children each day. Please make sure that they bring a hat, water bottle and closed in shoes so they are able to participate in the fun packed day!

Bookings can be made online.

iCheck-in Portal

A massive ‘Thank You!’ goes out to all the parents for persevering with us during this critical rollover to our new online system, ‘KidSoft’. This has been well-accepted as an easier way to manage your accounts and bookings.  Payment details will need to be re-entered onto your accounts as this data is not allowed to be transitioned from our old system to the new due to complying with ‘Payment Card Industry Data Security Laws’.

If you require assistance at any stage please contact us at the service or accounts on 1300 612 462.
